If you live in the American Gulf, chances are your well water isn't exactly safe to drink. Even if you can get clean drinking water from somewhere else, there's a good chance that the salt in the ocean has wreaked havoc on your pipes and well. So, to make sure you can still get clean water for bathing, cooking, and cleaning, you might want to know how to make salt water. We'll show you how in 5 easy steps. First of all, you'll need your salt water generator. This is a device that purifies the salt water with reverse osmosis before pumping it into your home's potable water system. A good one will remove most of the salt from the seawater that it receives. You will also need a hose with an adjustable nozzle that can be used during installation and then discarded after it has been used only once or twice. Before you begin, make sure your salt water generator is plugged in and your under sink pump is working. If you have a water softener, the salt water generator will not work with it. You also must have a hole drilled under your sink for the hose to fit through. This hole should be from 1/4 to 5/8 of an inch in diameter. Make sure you don't use a drill bit that's too large, since this will cause problems with fitting the hose through the hole. Once that's done, go outside and plug one end of the hose into your salt water generator's output port. Close the other end of the hose under running water to ensure it's not clogged. Now you're ready to start filling your salt water generator with seawater. Grab the hose and position it so that it's approximately 2 or 3 inches below the edge of your well or ocean, whichever you will be filling with salt water. Then open the nozzle part way and fill it until there's about 4 inches of seawater in the bottom of your generator. If there's not enough, run more water through your hose until you get that level in your generator. Fill the saltwater generator up to about 1 inch from its top with seawater. The rest should be filled with clean freshwater for flushing out any salty residue in your system. Leave it there for at least an hour. Now, close the flow of water to your salt water generator by closing the valve on the output port. Then, turn off all of your home's water sources (hose bibs, etc.). Now open your faucet that you plan to use to fill your bathtub with salt water until it runs out clear. This will get rid of any leftover freshwater in your system and make sure your pipes are flushed clean. Once you've done this, close the faucet and return to filling up your salt water generator with seawater. Open the nozzle again and make sure there is 4 inches in the bottom again. cfa1e77820
